Flexer / desk

#desk-setup · compact mode is for the UI

Put the chat at eye height.

A beautiful custom CSS theme will not save a laptop in your lap. Fluxer sessions run long. The desk should be an instance you can actually inhabit.

Stick figure standing.
Part Aim Cheap version
Monitor Top of the screen at or slightly below eye line, about an arm away Stack of books. Laptop on a box, separate keyboard
Keyboard & mouse Elbows near 90°, shoulders dropped, wrists straight Any external keyboard. Tray or a lower desk shelf
Chair Feet on the floor, hips roughly as high as knees, some low-back support A towel rolled at the lumbar. Footrest = another box
Standing Screen still at eye line. Soft knees. Weight shifts. Not a military lockout Kitchen counter for laptop-plus-keyboard. A cardboard riser
Audio Headset so you are not craning toward tinny speakers The headset you already use for Fluxer. You are ahead.
Eyes 20-20-20: every 20 minutes, look 20 feet away for 20 seconds Look at a far wall during someone else's story
Light A lamp you can dim after midnight raids Don't sit in a cave with only the monitor. Your circadian rhythm is not a dark theme.

Sitting is a position, not a personality

Alternate. A sit-stand desk is nice. A counter and a chair is enough. The win is changing shape more than once per release cycle.

If you stand, do not freeze. Shift feet, calf raise, unweight a hip. Standing still for three hours is just a vertical chair.

If you sit, keep the pelvis from rolling into a full slouch for the whole movie. You will slouch. That is human. Reset when you notice, like you would restart a stuck client.

Laptop users

The fold-up Fluxer trap

A laptop on a table makes you look down and shrug your shoulders to type. For any call longer than a snack:

  1. Raise the laptop.
  2. Plug in a keyboard and mouse.
  3. Use the headset you already own.

This one change outperforms a lot of mobility work you will skip.

Checklist you can post in #desk-setup

  • I can see the top of Fluxer without nodding at the desk
  • I can type without hovering my shoulders
  • I have water in reach
  • I can stand without unplugging from the call
  • I know where the floor is for the daily ten

Then stretch the hips the chair created
